Fun Photos 2.0 : *New* Gaussian Blur + Feature Complete Photo Editor
Some Fun Photo 2.0 tidbits as promised!
Fun Photos 2.0 Photo Editor has reached feature lockdown, from this point we’ll be working on stabilizing, debugging and optimizing the features we’ve added and the whole photo editor. The photo editor is now, what we call feature complete. Sure there’s a ton more features lined up that we could add, but adding a new feature, modifying an old one, increases the chance of something getting broken. We’re pretty pleased with the feature set we’ve gotten lined up.
One new function I’m very proud to talk about is our new Gaussian Blur routine. Gaussian Blur is one of the slowest pieces of code in our toolset. Shortly after we released 1.0, we found a way to improve the speed to the Gaussian Blur, however it was still too slow by our standards.
So we spent some time figuring out new ways and working hard to try to convert this slow paced effect into a super charged, blink and you miss it Gaussian Blur… Our new routine is so much faster that we couldn’t believe it! Below, I’ve included a table to illustrate the ginormously huge speed increase!
| Radius | NEW Gaussian Blur Code | Improved Gaussian Blur | 1.0 Gaussian Blur |
|---|---|---|---|
| 39 | .4 of a second (30x faster) | 3 Seconds (4x faster) | 14 Seconds |
| 64 | .4 of a second (68x faster) | 4 Seconds (6x faster) | 28 Seconds |
| 100 | .3 of a second (156x faster) | 6 Seconds (8x faster) | 47 Seconds |
The test image was a 10 Megapixel photo. Radius is the radius setting for the Gaussian Blur routine. The faster comparison is against the 1.0 Gaussian Blur. The improved Gaussian Blur was included with version 1.0.2 and newer.
Where to captain?
From here, our next step is to continue debugging, optimizing and polishing the current photo editor, and to start working on the photo sharing section.
We’ve written a whole new base for the sharing system, it should be faster and simpler to use. There’s a couple more sharing sites lined up, if you want to make sure that we know about the site you want to share to, feel free to comment on this article or to contact us.
We’re about 75% of the way through… Wahoo… With any luck we’ll be shipping in time for the summer…

Is there, or will there be, a blur that one could apply gently just to a certain part of the photo? I have some great pics of a public event but no recognizable images of minors are allowed by our rules. If I could just blur the faces a bit…
I tried doing a blur with small radius but it just made a hotspot.

Yes, in Fun Photos 2.0 you’ll be able to blur just an area of the photo.
